Canberra Mother's Day Classic

The Canberra event involves a 10km run a and 5km walk / run. If you are interested in taking part in the run or walk then please register here and check out the closing dates for registration below. You can also raise money for breast cancer research by taking part in fundraising - it's fun and easy to do! Set up a fundraising page here.

If running and walking isn't your thing you can still join in the fun of the day by volunteering to help out. Please volunteer here.

Alternatively you can come along and support all walkers and runners and join in the entertainment and activity taking place around the course.  All participants are in the running for spot prizes, given out around the course on the day.   

Don't forget to fill in a tribute card to wear on the day, dedicating your participation to someone you have lost to breast cancer or who is fighting the disease. You can download one and create it yourself, please click here.

Where: 

Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park.

The start line will be located on Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park, and the course will follow the footpath along the scenic Lake Burley Griffin.

When: 

Sunday 9 May 2010, from 7.30am to 12noon.

Registration closing dates: 
  • Enter before 5.00pm on Friday 23 April 2010 to qualify for the early bird registration fee.
  • Mailed entries close Friday 30 April 2010.
  • Online entries close at 12 noon on Wednesday 5 May 2010.
  • Team registrations close Wednesday 5 May 2010.
  • Enter by Friday 30 April 2010 to have your event information kit mailed to you before the event.
  • Registration also available on the day at the event from 7.30am. Arrive early to avoid the queues.

Teams

Every team member must register individually. There is no special entry form for teams (except if your team exceeds 10 members and one person will be paying for all fees. Please see large teams below).

If you are entering as part of a team, it is imperative that you all nominate the same team name. We will endeavour to match up variations of team names should this occur however we cannot guarantee accuracy.

Large teams

If you are entering more than 10 members in your team, and a team representative will be paying for the entry fees, please contact mdc_teams@ausrun.com.au or call 1300 762 241 before entering online or by hard-copy form. Entries close on Wednesday 28 April 2010.

Event information kit: 

All entries received before close of business Friday 30 April 2010 will have their race kit mailed to them. If you register after Friday 30 April 2010, you will need to collect your race kit at the Mother’s Day Classic registration area at Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park, on the morning of the event.

Please ensure you arrive at least 30 minutes before your event starts.

Race kits and merchandise will commence being sent from Monday 29 March.

Each entrant will receive their own individual race kit. If you entered a number of people at the same address then each person will be mailed their own race kit. Your race kit will include: race number, participant instructions, and tribute card (if requested). Individual race kits may arrive on different days, even if you entered them all at the same time.

You will need to collect your timing chip on the morning of the event from the timing chip collection marquee at Commonwealth Park.

If you purchased merchandise, this will be mailed separately to the race kit.

Runners: 

Runners will be timed. All runners will need to collect a black timing band from the timing band collection marquee on the morning of the event. Timing bands will not be posted.  The timing band must be worn around your ankle in order to receive a finishing time.

The timing band must be returned at the finish line, if it is not returned there will be a $70 charge. If you accidently take the timing band, please return the timing band to the below address by Wednesday 26 May 2010.

Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your event in order to allow plenty of time to register and warm up.

7.30am            Registration open
8.15am            Warm up aerobic for the 10km run commence
8.28am            Elite 10km ( new time)
8.30am            10km run start (complete two laps of the lake)
9.15am            Warm up aerobic for the 5km run and walkers commence
9.25am            Elites 5km start
9.30am            5km run start
9.35am            5km walk start

The course: 

The event start is situated at Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park. The course follows the footpath around scenic Lake Burley Griffen.  The finish will be positioned adjacent to Lake Burley Griffen in Rond Terrace.

Getting there: 

Car parking

Is available in the car parks along Constitution Avenue. There are underpasses joining Constitution Avenue to Commonwealth Park. Please adhere to all parking restrictions.

Drop-off zone

A drop-off zone will be located in the car park directly in front of Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park. Drivers will be permitted to drop participants off and then seek parking elsewhere. Disabled parking is available within the drop off zone limited space.

Event day information: 

There is an information marquee located at the assembly area. If you have any queries please go to the information marquee.

Numbers

All runners and walkers need to pin their event bib number on the front of their top before arriving at the event.

Anyone without an event bib number will not be permitted to start the event.

First aid stations

First aid personnel will be located on the course and at the finish area.

Water stations

Water will be provided at the assembly area, on the course, and at the finish line. 

Cloak room

A cloak room will be located in the assembly area for storage of your clothing during the run/walk. Bikes cannot be placed in the cloak room.

Please attach the tear-off strip from your race number to your backpack or clothing bag. We cannot accept responsibility for valuables lost or stolen.

Food court

At the food court in the assembly area you will find coffee and drinks vendors and the Mother’s Day Classic BBQ.

Activities at the event: 

The Mother’s Day Classic includes lots of extra activities for kids and adults. These include warm-up aerobics, roving performers, a food court, free massages, entertainment plus a kid’s activity area with face painting and a jumping castle.

Kids can enter the Mother’s Day Classic to walk or run so long as they have permission from their parent or guardian.

Prizes: 
  • All participants receive a 2010 medallion, which cleverly converts to a key ring and lanyard.
  • Male and female winners of the 10km run will receive $500 kindly donated by Perennial Investment Partners.
  • The male winner of the 5km run will receive $500 kindly donated by Australian Super.
  • The female winner of the 5km run will receive $500 kindly donated by cHr Consulting.
  • Age category medals for 5km and 10km runs will be mailed to winners of each age category after the event. Age categories - U15, U18, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+.
  • Largest School Team - the largest school team will receive $1000 prize money.
  • UniSuper Largest Tertiary Institution Team Award - The largest team from ACT will receive a magnificent trophy. The largest tertiary team to participate in the Mother’s Day Classic nationwide will receive $1000 prize money kindly donated by UniSuper.
  • Largest corporate team wins a magnificent trophy.
  • Highest Individual Fundraiser in ACT - the individual raising the most money in ACT will win domestic flights to the value of $1000 kindly donated by QANTAS.
  • Spot prizes - all participants are eligible to win great spot prizes including weekend packages, meals and gift baskets.
Tribute wall: 

Tribute cards can be attached to your top in support or memory of a loved one touched by breast cancer. Tribute cards can be download from the website, requested via the registration process or collected on day from the tribute card marquee.

A special Tribute Wall will be located at the assembly area. Participants can choose to pin their tribute cards on the wall after their run or walk.

Results and certificates: 

Go to www.mothersdayclassic.org on Monday 10 May for run results. You can also print out an official certificate from the website. Walkers will not be timed.

Runner’s age category winners will be listed on the website and medals will be sent out to the winners within two weeks.

Presentation ceremonies

The run presentation ceremonies will be held at the completion of each event at the finish line stage.

10km runners at 9.30am

5km runners at 10.10am

Team awards and presentations will be held on the main stage in the assembly area from 10.45am.

Important information: 
  • No pets, rollerblades, skateboards or bikes are permitted on the course. Prams are permitted, but please start towards the back of the group.
  • There will be a large number of people at the event, so make sure you use the meeting points provided.
  • Ensure you keep an eye on your children and organise specific points to meet before the event in case someone gets lost.
  • Be aware that you are a pedestrian on public roads and please follow instructions from race officials.
  • Please remember to dress according to the weather (warm clothing, rain jacket, hat and sunscreen) and wear comfortable shoes.
