Mother's Day Classic Sydney expands Domain course

The Mother’s Day Classic Domain course is bigger and better in 2010. More people can now join the nation’s favourite charity event at the Domain on Sunday 9 May 2010 with the introduction of a new course allowing more people to participate.

Sydneysiders can enjoy an extended walk in the Domain with the new option to walk 8km, as well as 4km round the Mother’s Day Classic scenic Domain course and for the first time there will be no limit on running entries. Previously a sellout event with numbers capped at 9,000, the Mother’s Day Classic could reach record attendance figures this year.

“Since the event began in 1998, Australians have walked 1.5 million kilometres - the equivalent of 80 times round the country - to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s research programs. With no limit on Domain attendance and a new 8km walk, we look at reaching record participation and funds this year,” Sharon Morris, National Manager Mother’s Day Classic said.

Registrations for the Domain event are up more than 200 per cent on last year.

“We have had a fantastic start to the Mother’s Day Classic registrations in Sydney and Parramatta. Having registrations up more than 200 per cent demonstrates the support people have for helping find a cure for breast cancer,” Ms Morris added.

The 8km and 4km Domain Park course includes running and walking near Mrs Macquaries chair with panoramic views of the Harbour.

From fitness fanatics to families who enjoy a stroll in the park, the Mother’s Day Classic is a great opportunity for the whole community to enjoy this special morning and take steps to help find a cure for breast cancer. The morning also includes free entertainment and activities for participants and their kids.

The largest school, community and corporate team are awarded exclusive trophies and the fastest runners receive a cash prize. A prize is also available for the highest individual fundraiser in NSW.  At the Mother’s Day Classic, everyone is a winner and will receive a special 2010 medallion to commemorate the day.

Participants can choose to wear tribute cards dedicated to loved ones affected by breast cancer. At the end of the event these tribute cards will be displayed on a special wall for all the public to view as a poignant reminder of the impact of breast cancer on so many Australian families.

The Mother’s Day Classic has raised $5.7 million for breast cancer research since it began in 1998.  In 2010 the Mother’s Day Classic will be held in ten major cities and 25 regional locations across Australia with a potential 90,000 people joining in the breast cancer research journey.
