In 2022, we are proud to welcome Mary-Jane Courage as one of our new Classic Fundraising Legends; having now raised over $100,000 over the years of her participation in the event. Mary-Jane is pictured here with her mum, Pat, and we wanted to tell you a bit about their story and why they have continued to be committed supporters of breast cancer research over the past decade.
Mary-Jane’s Mother’s Day Classic journey has been close to her heart. Every year, she walks in memory of her sister Anne Maree, who she lost to breast cancer in 2012. Anne Maree was meant to also walk in 2012, but on the day she finished her treatment of surgery, chemo and radiation, she was diagnosed with metastasis and passed away nine days later, with the cancer spreading to her liver and brain.
Mary-Jane and Pat participate in the Mother’s Day Classic to honour Anne Maree, and, in more recent years, other friends and family members who have been diagnosed, including two of Mary-Jane’s sisters-in-law.
“There is no good timing with cancer, only good people affected”
“There is no good timing with cancer, only good people affected,” Mary-Jane tells us. With ongoing breast cancer research helping to improve treatment outcomes for those affected, she remains hopeful for a breast cancer-free future.
With over $103,000 raised for breast cancer research so far, Mary-Jane is grateful for the generosity of her family and friends who have supported her. She also pays tribute to her amazing mum, who is pictured here wearing a blouse that belonged to Anne Maree.
“My mum, Pat, has endured so much. She has lost three children and my father Lance. She is amazing to have survived such pain. She is a kind, caring, and loving mum who misses them all every day.”
We thank Mary-Jane, Pat, and everyone who has supported their Mother’s Day Classic journey.
