Tamara’s message remains strong; “grab your boobs please and pass on the message”.
Mother’s Day Classic Community Ambassador, Tamara Henwood, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2016.
On the Monday, she had found a lump in her left breast so her GP referred her for a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy if required. She always had lumpy, dense breasts, but this lump was different. By Thursday, she was sitting in a surgeon’s office and her breast cancer diagnosis was confirmed.
Tamara documented her journey, being open with her friends and family as she underwent a double mastectomy, six months of chemotherapy and more than 20 sessions of radiation.
“Some of what I shared online was very cathartic, if not self-indulgent, but I knew early on that it was beneficial when I received messages from as far away as Canada.”
This breast cancer awareness month, Tamara’s message remains strong; “grab your boobs please and pass on the message”. She wants to empower everyone to be their own advocate, to be aware of their bodies and to be proactive in getting checked if they notice any changes in or on their skin.
We encourage all women to listen to Tamara’s advice and help us spread the word. Talk to your friends and encourage them to take action this month and beyond.
