Running for Mum
To my friends and community (mostly) on the other side of the world 🇬🇧
On 11th May, I’m running the Mother’s Day Classic in Brisbane to raise awareness and funds for ovarian and breast cancer research.
In August 2023, my Mum was diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian Cancer - just one day before her 55th birthday, and only five weeks after starting a new chapter of her life back in her hometown, Brisbane.
Her diagnosis came late, like so many others. Ovarian cancer is often called the “silent killer” because its early symptoms are vague and easily mistaken for other things like the menopause, heavy periods or even bloating and indigestion. (Cervical screenings and smear tests do not detect ovarian cancer.)
I’m running for my Mum. I’m running to share her story. And I’m running to raise awareness, so that maybe you’ll encourage your Mum, Aunt, Friend, Wife, Girlfriend, or even yourself, to push for more answers when something doesn’t feel right.
Mum’s life’s belongings are still packed in boxes in the UK, never to be unpacked in the new life she’d imagined in Australia. I have no words to describe what she’s going through. She fights every day for just a little more time in this world and It’s a heartbreaking honour to be holding her hand through it.
We can’t change the past, but we can make noise now, to spread awareness and raise funds that could change someone else’s future.
